Dr Simmelink recommends annual exams. The horse's body condition is assessed with weight determination by tape measurement. Nutritional counseling is offered if appropriate. A conditioning program can be discussed at that time. An oral exam is performed to determine the need for dental intervention. The skin and eyes are evaluated, the legs palpated and the hoof and shoeing reviewed.
A vaccination program (tailored to the individual horse's needs) is determined based upon a prior vaccine history and the future needs of the horse (see resources). A periodic fecal exam is recommended along with regular deworming (see resources). Helpful laboratory evaluation may be recommended including testing for Lyme disease and Coggins testing. Dr Simmelink offers microchipping and is USDA accredited to issue both interstate and international health certificates.
